Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies 1 million smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. Our 8,000+ team is drawn from diverse backgrounds and professions. With operations across six core countries in Africa, we make farmers more prosperous by providing quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural training to improve harvests. On average, the farmers we serve harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Tree Program provides farmers with long-term assets in trees with the aim to support them to generate more streams of income and become resilient to climate shocks. In partnership with the Twigire Muhinzi Program, we have distributed more than 50 million live seedlings to farmers since 2017, and we aim to distribute 20 million trees in 2022 alone. We produce seedlings in our 6 central nurseries and we are scaling our decentralized nursery model to more than 1,000 cells. We are looking for a project specialist to oversee our central nurseries tree production and help us produce 40-50% of our yearly tree targets. In 2022 alone, you will be manage the team that will produce over 8-10 million trees from central nurseries. You will report directly to the tree operations and manage 6 nursery managers

RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain/Improve tree seedlings’ quality to maximize chances of in-field survival.
Oversee efficiency and compliance.
Support and develop the team.
Support and collaborate in tree distribution from our central nurseries.
Manage tracking materials to ensure reporting of key performance indicators.
Manage inventory of trees and nursery materials to ensure effective use and forecasting
Manage trials at the nursery level to ensure that the team is learning and that long-term goals are met.
Prepare distribution materials, including process and tracking documents.
Develop new protocols for efficient tree production at the nursery level.
Review existing production protocols and postmortems to advise improvements for quality assurance.
Conduct field visits to both internal and external nurseries to provide best practice advice.
Put in place quality and quantity control measures in order to deliver on targets.
Ensure that inputs and materials are used efficiently.
Ensure policy compliance and fraud prevention by implementing control measures.
Conduct policy training to ensure that all employees are aware of the organization’s internal policies and regulations.
Conduct regular check-in meetings and provide regular support.
Plan for team growth and provide performance development plans.
Develop a group of owners.
Plan the distribution at the nursery level.
Liaise with the Logistics team regarding seedling transport from nurseries to the sites.
Own the tree distribution schedule at the nursery.

QUALIFICATIONS

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

3+ years of agroforestry or forestry experience is required.
Team management experience
A bachelor’s degree in agroforestry, forestry, or a related field is required for this position.
Experience managing tree nurseries is preferred
Fluency in English is required.
PREFERRED START DATE

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, start dates can vary significantly by role. We are adapting rapidly to Covid-19 and most of our team is now working remotely. Given the changing environment, we will appreciate your flexibility in confirming a start date.

JOB LOCATION

Kigali, Rwanda, 40% travel to our nursery locations in Musanze,Rusizi, Kayonza, Ngoma, Gisagara, and Karongi
