Job Description


The Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) is a unique and innovative English language undergraduate institution dedicated to preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders of Rwanda and East Africa. Students at RICA engage in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities emphasizing Conservation Agriculture and One Health principles, oral and written communication, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

In an experiential learning environment, students develop the knowledge and experience necessary for a wide range of careers in agriculture. Students at RICA experience the six Enterprises including Dairy, Poultry and Swine, Food Processing, Row and Forage Crops, Vegetable and Fruit Crops, Irrigation and Mechanization.

The curriculum is designed to incorporate threads of Innovation, Conservation, One Health Systems Thinking, and Entrepreneurship. Communication, One Health Systems Thinking, and Entrepreneurship are woven throughout the curriculum.

All RICA graduates will be innovative problem solvers able to operate farms and ranches, start agribusinesses, assume management roles in cooperatives, NGOs, and other agricultural enterprises, serve their communities as extension agents and technical and policy experts, or assume positions of agricultural leadership in Rwanda.

 POSITION: Driver

DESCRIPTION

The Driver’s primary duty is to ensure the secure transport of university staff, students, and materials. This role demands strict compliance with all traffic safety rules and diligent upkeep of vehicles to maintain peak performance. The Driver will mainly operate in Gashora-Bugesera District and Kigali, with periodic trips to other parts of Rwanda as necessitated by university activities. Key responsibilities include:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates RICA vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation of personnel, students, and materials for all RICA-related activities.
  • Maintain an unwavering commitment to passenger and vehicle safety, adhering strictly to Rwandan traffic laws and RICA’s transportation policies.
  • Perform comprehensive pre-trip vehicle inspections, including thorough checks of all mechanical components and documentation validity.
  • Proactively monitor and report on vehicle condition, promptly communicating any mechanical issues or approaching document expirations to relevant supervisors.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, keeping RICA staff and supervisors informed of trip status, potential delays, or any transportation-related concerns.
  • Uphold high standards of vehicle cleanliness and maintenance, ensuring all RICA vehicles are in optimal condition for use.
  • Exercise utmost care in handling sensitive documents, packages, and other transported items to prevent loss or damage.
  • Provide crucial logistical support for RICA events, conferences, and activities, adapting to changing schedules and requirements as needed.
  • Efficiently manage various errands, including document collection and delivery, as assigned by supervisors or other RICA authorities.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate logs of trips, fuel consumption, and vehicle maintenance activities for record-keeping and analysis.
  • Continuously update knowledge of local routes, traffic patterns, and transportation best practices to enhance efficiency and safety.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to undertake additional responsibilities as directed by RICA management, contributing to the overall success of the institution.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY

  • At least Advanced level certificate (a high school diploma or equivalent)
  • Valid Rwandan driver’s license (Category B&D) with a clean driving record, D1 is an added advantage.
  • Proven experience as a professional driver, preferably in a similar role or organization
  • Excellent knowledge of local and regional routes and geography.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours and travel extensively as required.
  • Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda.
  • Basic Computer Skills (Excel and Word) preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Exceptional character, displaying honesty, trustworthiness, and reliability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to education and agriculture.
