Job Description


Purpose Statement

The role of the TM&D Area Manager will be to provide Leadership through Planning, Objective setting, Impmentation, Evaluation, Control and Management of both Internal and external stakeholders and take full ownership of infrastructure & processes aimed at Trade Marketing and Distribution excellence, with an overall objective of driving commercial results (short and long term) and maintain alignment with the TM&D marketing strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver Volume as agreed during Co- plan/ Quarterly Business Reviews.
  • Ensure achievement of volume objectives in the area/territories
  • Ensure achievement of distribution objectives in area/territories
  • Ensure that Distributors remain within defined stock policy.
  • Ensure Distributor shipments and payments are done on time and in full.
  • Regularly review (quarterly) Trading Terms and Conditions of Distributors to ensure BAT’s exposure is limited to a minimum.
  • Ensure visibility of own brands across all channels by deploying and making effective use of POS materials (merchandising) and other Trade Marketing programmes and initiatives, in strategic channels, according to channel strategies.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Trade, on request develop appropriate pricing strategies for the market & management of Trade Margin frameworks.
  • Ensure pricing strategies are implemented and recommended retail selling prices are adhered to at trade channels, as per trade marketing and distribution strategies
  • Provide field information and reports on market and consumer trends, distributors performance, competitor’s performance, level of achievement of own strategy and opportunities to ensure the Head of Trade and the Cluster Manager are informed at all times.
  • Develop and adhere to a well defined work programme and route plan as agreed with Area Manager, and ensure achievement of planned calls, effective calls and call efficiency of the Brand Coverage Plan to drive Trade Marketing initiatives.
  • Effective Implementation of cycle plans instructions to meet the company’s objectives.
  • Successful support portfolio strategies to drive growth in Market share and create a sustainable business for the long term.
  • Ensure self and team always meet targets, due dates and quality standards by providing professional advice to assure achievement of goals and measures
  • Manage, measure and evaluate allocated area’s performance on a weekly basis.
  • Measure and evaluate Distributor performance formally on a quarterly basis. (P&L)
  • Contribute to the overall marketing strategy and plan by integrating the brand & consumer segment strategies into the trade marketing & distribution strategy
  • Oversee the execution of Brand- and Key Account programmes and convey a clear picture of current performance to team members and distributor.
  • Manage the productivity through the control of resources & operational budgets (NBSE budget, including trade specific programmes)
  • Implementation of Key Control Check-list across functions to minimise level of business risk to the company.
  •  Maintain an up-to-date and accurate Retail Classification System database and merchandising digest at all times as per guidelines.
  • Manage the effective use of call cards by all salesmen in the territory, analyse and use the information collected to improve performance and decision making.
  • Maintain a performance TM&D dashboard and track weekly and monthly
  • Evaluate the success of all activities implemented (Trade- and Brand) in the assigned territory versus set objectives within the prescribed timelines.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Business degree in Business Administration / Marketing MBA will be desirable for this role.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in tobacco or a similar FMCG category
  • Minimum 2 years BAT TM&D Management with good knowledge of TM&D best practice and EMF II
  • Have a clear understanding of the above market framework and new way of working.
  • Good understanding of Supply Chain & Excise/Duty regimes
  • Good understanding of Key Accounts
  • Good understanding of Trade Channels
  • Understanding of Marketing Research tools and information analysis
  • Ability to engage with high level internal & external partners/stakeholders
  • Proven people leadership skills with ability to motivate and energise team
  • Proven understanding of CORA & Legal framework
